A grit or No. 4 finish label is not a measured Ra value—and Ra alone is not a cleanability result.

A finish name can identify a mill or fabrication appearance, while Ra is one profile parameter measured under stated conditions. Neither one, by itself, defines weld dressing, pits, scratches, directionality, passive condition, residues, cleanability or the complete product-contact surface that will be delivered.

Separate the evidence

Four different questions are hidden inside one phrase such as ‘polished stainless tank.’

The RFQ must state which surfaces are in scope and which evidence owns appearance, roughness, fabrication defects, treatment and cleaning release. Do not translate a grit number, No. 4 label or nominal sheet finish into an invented Ra result.

What surface and fabrication state are being specified?

Map product-contact shell, heads, nozzles, agitator, internals, removable parts, welds and heat-affected zones. Distinguish incoming flat product, formed surfaces, shop-fabricated areas, field welds and repaired areas.

Is the requirement a process, appearance or measured profile?

Record finish designation, abrasive or polishing sequence and direction separately from the requested roughness parameter and acceptance value. A process label cannot substitute for an as-built measurement record.

How will the measurement remain comparable?

Name the parameter and standard edition, instrument and stylus, filter and cutoff settings, evaluation length, direction, location, repeats, calibration or verification and treatment state. One isolated average does not describe every surface feature.

What evidence releases the complete surface?

Combine the approved drawing and finish schedule with material traceability, fabrication and weld records, treatment record, location-based measurements, visual inspection, cleaning evidence where required, deviations and change control.

Move from a vague finish phrase to an auditable as-built surface record.

The sequence does not select a universal finish, Ra threshold, abrasive, treatment or cleaning method. Those choices depend on the actual product, corrosion, contamination, cleaning, hygiene and destination requirements.

Map the surface boundary

Identify every in-scope product-contact and non-product-contact area, component, joint, weld, formed surface, removable part and field-fabricated interface.

Write separate requirement fields

State governing specification, finish and treatment route, measured parameter, numerical acceptance owner, defect criteria, visual condition and cleaning evidence without converting one into another.

Approve the measurement plan

Freeze instrument and settings, orientation, sampling locations and density, weld coverage, repeats, calibration or verification, raw-data retention and nonconformance handling before fabrication release.

Release the fabricated configuration

Review the as-built finish schedule, treatment and inspection records, deviations, repairs and any project-specific cleaning or hygienic evidence before bounded acceptance.

Buyer decision FAQ

A surface-finish acceptance plan needs more than a grit number or one Ra reading.

Does a grit number guarantee a stainless-tank Ra value?

No universal conversion follows. Abrasive system, sequence, pressure, tool condition, material, starting surface, direction, operator or automation, forming, welds and treatment can change the result. Specify the process only where needed and verify the agreed parameter on the as-built surface.

Is No. 4 finish the same as one universal Ra value?

No. A finish designation needs its governing product or project specification. Do not treat the label as a universal numerical result or transfer a flat-sheet finish directly to a fabricated vessel and welds.

Does an acceptable Ra prove cleanability?

No. Ra is one profile parameter and does not by itself describe every peak, valley, pit, scratch, crevice, joint, weld, lay, residue, drainage condition or cleaning route. Cleanability requires its own complete design and evidence review.

Should welds be accepted from the parent-sheet finish certificate?

No. Forming, welding, heat tint, dressing, repairs and treatment can change the local condition. Map weld and heat-affected zones and state their own fabrication, visual, measurement, treatment and repair evidence.

Are pickling, passivation and electropolishing interchangeable?

No. They are different treatment routes with different controlled purposes and conditions. Name the required procedure, surface precondition, scope, verification and exclusions instead of substituting one label for another.

Does this page claim a JINPIONEER hygienic finish, Ra, polishing or certification capability?

No. It is an RFQ and evidence-allocation framework only. Materials, fabrication, finishes, welds, treatments, measurements, values, cleanability, hygienic design, services, compliance, certification and results remain unconfirmed until project-specific evidence is reviewed and approved.
