Sand Mill vs Bead Mill: compare the configuration, not only the name.

“Sand mill” is still a common industry and search term for media-based wet grinding. “Bead mill” often describes the same broad equipment family more directly—but neither label is a complete specification.

What the label leaves open

A buyer can receive two “sand mill” quotations that describe different process routes—or two differently named machines that address a similar duty. Compare the engineering basis underneath the vocabulary.

Ask for the chamber and agitator concept in plain language. The equipment name alone does not define the internal working arrangement.

The name is useful. The configuration makes it specific.

Is a sand mill the same as a bead mill?

The terms often overlap in industrial wet-grinding language, especially for horizontal media mills. They should not be treated as a complete technical equivalence: the internal design, media, separation system and operating method still need to be defined.

Does the term sand mill mean the machine must use sand?

No assumption about the grinding media should be made from the legacy name. The proposed media type and size range must be stated for the material, mill configuration and target.

Can two quotations use different names for a similar duty?

Yes. Compare the process basis and configuration rather than rejecting or accepting a proposal from the heading alone.

What should I ask before comparing mill prices?

Ask each supplier to state the feed basis, target and test method, chamber and agitator concept, media and separation approach, operating mode, cooling and cleaning boundary, wetted construction and exclusions.
