Select product-contact sealing from the full exposure and shaft duty.

A product name or generic elastomer label cannot select the seal. Mechanical-seal faces, secondary seals, hardware, shaft movement and any support system must be reviewed against the complete process and cleaning sequence.

Review the sealing system

Fluid compatibility is necessary, but it is not the whole seal duty.

The seal sits at the intersection of chemistry, rotating motion, equipment geometry and the process environment. Every transition and cleaning fluid belongs in the brief.

Complete fluid exposure

List product stages, concentrations, contaminants, solids, rinses, cleaning fluids, exposure order, hold periods and upset cases.

Shaft and operating duty

Describe motion, run pattern, pressure and temperature states, dry-running risk, vibration, start-stop sequence and maintenance access.

Containment and support

Define acceptable leakage, release consequence, flush or support-fluid constraints, monitoring, utilities and ownership of auxiliary equipment.

Map every exposure

Record product, additions, vapor, rinse, cleaning and environmental contact in the order the seal sees them.

State acceptable leakage, consequence, support-fluid limits, monitoring, drains and maintenance workflow.

Confirm and test

Obtain joint equipment and seal-supplier review, then test representative materials or service where compatibility or behavior remains uncertain.

Buyer decision FAQ

Seal selection begins with service evidence—not a material nickname.

Can a mechanical seal be selected from the product name alone?

No. The review needs full fluid composition and sequence, solids, temperature and pressure states, shaft duty, cleaning, containment target, equipment geometry and support-system conditions.

Are elastomer compatibility charts enough to approve a seal?

No. Charts can support screening, but combined fluids, exposure sequence, temperature, dynamic motion, abrasion and actual hardware can change the service. Obtain supplier review and test uncertain exposure.

Why include cleaning fluids in the seal brief?

The seal can see rinse and cleaning fluids as well as product. Their concentration, order, temperature, contact time and frequency can affect compatibility and the operating sequence.

When should a seal support system be discussed?

Discuss it whenever the selected sealing arrangement may need controlled fluid, pressure, temperature, lubrication or monitoring conditions. The responsible seal and equipment suppliers must define the need and boundary.
